Romney Statement on President Biden’s National Security Strategy

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Romney (R-UT) today released the following statement regarding President Biden’s National Security Strategy (NSS):

“China has openly expressed its ambition to replace the United States as the geopolitical, military, and economy power of the world. With each passing day, it becomes a bigger threat to freedom and democracy while we stand by and watch.

“I welcome the Administration’s recent release of their National Security Strategy. This strategy has been long-awaited, given today’s increasingly complex and dangerous geopolitical environment. Like the previous administration, the Biden Administration has rightly recognized China as the United States’ greatest geopolitical threat. But the work to develop a strategy to address the challenge China poses to the U.S. and the world order must not end with the release of the NSS.

“It is past time for the United States to develop a grand strategy with respect to the People’s Republic of China, which will direct when diplomatic, economic, or military levers should be used in the geostrategic and geoeconomic competition with China—with the overall goal of deterring a kinetic fight. Senator Menendez and I authored an amendment to last year’s defense bill which directed the Administration to build upon the work of the NSS to develop a grand strategy with respect to China.

“The U.S. has a robust history of grand strategy development in the face of prodigious threats. We should apply what we’ve learned from previous successful models of grand strategy and build a strategy that can guide the U.S. to successfully address the evolving challenges and contours of the new era of geostrategic and geoeconomic competition with China. I look forward to continuing our work in the Senate to bolster the Administration’s efforts in countering China.”
